Artist Statement:

Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, Anam has spent most of her life experiencing, observing and questioning the role of women in South Asian culture. Defined by men, for men, these stereotypical roles shape the identity of women, who are often not able to breakaway from the burden of expectations.

Anam’s work, primarily acrylic on canvas, depicts the stories of these women. It portrays their struggles to overcome obstacles deeply embedded in the social and cultural fabric of South Asia. Switching between representational art and abstract techniques, Anam explores ideas of identity, objectification, marginalization, and what it really means to be a South Asian woman juxtaposed against the zeitgeist of western individualism and gender equality.

Anam holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Development from McGill University. Now based in Toronto, she is following her long-time passion for art, having left behind a career in consulting.
