I live and work in Toronto, gathering metal from the shores of Lake Ontario, and old windows and frames from curbsides throughout the city and junk yards in Northern Ontario. The found objects are just that, bits on the ground and stuff left in the back of drawers. There’s no good explanation as to why I started collecting rusted metal. It just speaks to me; the shape, the texture, the colour. I can’t seem to pass it by. What potential would be lost when one unique piece can decide the subject matter for a whole work? I often incorporate found objects because they are their own castaways and offer an element of the unexpected. I’m constantly inspired to create something meaningful out of the beauty I see in the material I collect.
