Tempering the raw conceptual power of the abstract and surreal with meticulous geometry and detailed, decorative line work, Catherine fuses the innate, underlying forces at work in our recollection of events and objects with the visible and reasoned forces of cognition. Whether through illustration or painting, she believes it’s important to bring emotion and trauma to the forefront of otherwise static experiences; calling on the nature of the unconscious, as much as the conscious, when studying human perception. Her favourite art movements include Surrealism, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Expressionism, while she counts Mars-1, Lauren Marx, Alphonse Mucha, Alex Grey, Jess Hrycyk, Alex Pardee, Aaron Horkey, and of course, Dali as her most admired artists for their singular efforts.
Though Catherine will be the first to admit that, even after she’s finished with her pieces, they often retain a separate life, confounding to her and seemingly all their own. She believes it’s precisely in these meditative moments where one undertakes to amalgamate disparate experiences that the ingrained poetics of the mind are themselves revealed.
